Wolfgang Hildesheimer thought dialogically: in his plays and radio dramas, in his regular interventions in public discourse, in speeches, statements, and interviews, and in prose works like the unloving legends. Even in the monologically structured major works Tynset and Masante, the crisis of interrupted dialogue is lamented and the reader is addressed. Hildesheimer himself has pointed out the significance of the dialogical principle for his work: only within it can there be "an objective image of the subject." The present selection of twelve notable correspondences showcases Hildesheimer's dialogical principle in one of the smallest forms of interpersonal communication: in letters. No matter how changeable the conversation partners, letter content, and tone may be—often with an ironic twist—whether it concerns the West German literary scene and the radio landscape of the 1950s and 60s.
