Everything is Simple, the first play by Kurt Drawert, premiered in the autumn of 1995. In room 228 of an abandoned hospital ward, two elderly men, Harry and Pit, have been spending their time for years in eventless seclusion from the world. "There, where you lie, people are brought in, and here, where I lie, people are taken away." The bed by the window, with a view of the world, makes one of them the master and the other the servant, dependent on what is told to him from outside. However, both characters share one thing in common: the uncertainty of actually being present. The search for a letter, a possible hint at their existence, runs through the play. And increasingly, shaped in grotesque and parable-like scenes, the recent history, exemplified by the fallen GDR, intrudes into the space. A play full of terrible imaginings.
