"Angelus Novus" was to be the name of a magazine that Walter Benjamin planned in 1922. "The true purpose of a magazine," Benjamin wrote in the announcement, "is to express the spirit of its time... relentless in thought, unwavering in expression, and entirely disregarding the audience when necessary, to adhere to what is genuinely current beneath the barren surface of what is new or the newest." The magazine never materialized, but the newspaper and magazine articles gathered here under Benjamin's title, which honor authors such as Brecht and Kafka, as well as Dostoevsky, Valery, and Hofmannsthal in literary essays, critiques, and reviews, remain indispensable to this day.
