Schmidt's own fear - "It will not be able to be typeset anymore" - had come true. The complex layout of the three-column novel, with its numerous marginal notes, overwhelmed typesetters and publishers. Now, at last, Zettel's Dream, the work that made Arno Schmidt famous overnight, is being released as a typeset book. Years of work by typesetters, editors, and proofreaders were necessary to create a reader-friendly typesetting without altering the character of the "superbook" (Arno Schmidt) or smoothing out its peculiarities. With this edition, a giant novel is to be rediscovered: it tells the love story between the aging writer Daniel Pagenstecher and the sixteen-year-old girl.
