Pierre Bourdieu and Niklas Luhmann represent the two most stimulating thinkers of recent sociology. They have approached their subject with markedly different methodologies. Bourdieu is regarded as a classic in the study of inequality, while Luhmann treated inequality in a more peripheral manner. Luhmann was an enthusiastic conceptual worker, whereas Bourdieu viewed the development of a framework of categories as a byproduct of his empirical work. The contributions in this volume explore the various convergences and divergences in the works of these two theorists, aiming to illuminate their works in a mutually enlightening way.
