The Buckower Elegies, long regarded merely as lyrical statements on politics, gain classical simplicity and naivety against their ancient backdrop. Jan Knopf's commentaries, based on Walter Benjamin's model, provide the first comprehensive interpretation of the cycle, analyzing each poem individually, the entirety of which creates a complex picture of Brecht's late lyricism. At the same time, this volume represents the first complete and critically edited edition of the Buckower Elegies, arranged according to Brecht's plans.
