This essay is not a history of film, but a taxonomy, an attempt to classify the images and signs that are significant for film. The present volume focuses on determining the elements of such a classification. Deleuze refers, on one hand, to Charles S. Peirce, who created the most comprehensive and diverse classification of images and signs. The other theoretical reference point is the philosophy of Henri Bergson and its reflection on the relationship between time and movement. Cinema is a new practice of images and signs, and it is the task of philosophy to provide the theory for this practice.
