The disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant reminds us that humanity's relationship with its planet resembles a disaster movie, where rival mafia groups engage in a gunfight with high-caliber weapons aboard an airplane at 12,000 meters (Peter Sloterdijk). The reactor catastrophe will leave behind irradiated areas and contaminated waters, demonstrating once again that humanity is a geological force that is hardly inferior to the powers of nature. As early as 2000, Dutch atmospheric researcher Paul J. Crutzen, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 for his work on the ozone layer, proposed the term "Anthropocene" for our current geological epoch, in which - according to Peter Sloterdijk - the point has finally been reached where "Spaceship Earth" is in control.
