Those who acquire knowledge, especially technical knowledge, can quickly find themselves on the edge of legality. The more powerful technologies become, the less freely available knowledge about these technologies is. Therefore, we must increasingly grapple with the bizarre concept of the "crime of reason," where freely acquired knowledge can be declared illegal for economic, political, or military reasons. One of the absurdities of patent law is that corporations can control new and even anticipated developments on a large scale.
