The word "farewell" is one of the most commonly used in everyday language and its psychology. Karl Heinz Bohrer engages in his extensive book not only in an intense and provocative manner with the various forms of farewell. Rather, his theoretical interest lies in farewell as a structural law. His analysis demonstrates that since 1800, a poetic discourse has emerged in which farewell takes on a radically new form that rejects any kind of consolation, culminating in the work of Charles Baudelaire. The modern grief that characterizes Baudelaire's work understands that the present is no longer experienceable, that it has always already slipped away. By exploring the figure of reflection of what has already been, the theory of grief investigates the limits of the experienceable.
