A traveling salesman returns to the island of his childhood for a day to sell wristwatches. He has meticulously planned his workday down to the last detail before his ship departs in the evening. In his pocket, he keeps one of those hemp strings he has been collecting since he was young. Suddenly, a thirteen-year-old girl disappears under mysterious circumstances. When her lifeless body is discovered at the foot of a steep cliff, wild speculations arise: while the girl's mother believes it to be an accident, the salesman is busy trying to establish an alibi. Yet, despite all his care and precision, there are gaps in his memory. With a cool detachment, the traveler observes those around him, diligently recording times, sales figures, and events of his stay. However, as soon as a female figure enters the scene, a certain tension flashes.
