The discussion involves the care claims of those affected, as well as their fears of pathologization and paternalism from a medical science that must determine what can be deemed normal. The physician and philosopher Andreas Heinz advocates for a philosophically informed concept of illness, which defines illness as a disturbance of essential organ functions that are harmful to the affected person or cause significant suffering, in light of the diversity of human life forms.
