At 30 years old, without any resonance from his three published poetry collections up to that point, but convinced of his own outstanding writing ability, Thomas Bernhard wrote to Siegfried Unseld in October 1961: "A few days ago, I sent a prose manuscript to your publishing house. I do not know you, only a few people who know you. But I am going it alone." Although Suhrkamp Verlag rejected the manuscript, the lone wolf and the publisher have since walked the path together since the publication of Bernhard's first novel "Frost" in 1963, leading the author into world literature. In the approximately 500 letters exchanged between them, a unique two-person play unfolds: sometimes it is a tragedy when Bernhard unleashes the familiar tirades from his works against the publisher, who in turn relies on the persuasive power of argument.
