Even when they are absent and unfulfilled, they still dominate the body, life, and rhythm: passion and love. They stand behind the door that a woman closes, being locked out like stray dogs. What remains is the individual, standing in the world as if she doesn't belong. One who wonders, like children or strangers do. Violent fantasies dominate the woman in "The Morning the Paperboy." She stages herself day after day as a waiting white body. Waiting like a spider. Here, as in the other stories, dream and nightmare lie closely together. Esther Dischereit has written herself into processes, stories that begin abruptly and end without a conclusion. They are refusals that make her stories as vivid as they are unsettling.
