The essays collected in this volume connect two claims. The first is that the conceptual innovations developed by the major figures of the German philosophical tradition, foremost among them Kant and Hegel—concepts such as self-consciousness, freedom, subjectivity, logic, spirit, and philosophical method—continue to hold significant philosophical interest and should not be regarded merely as historical artifacts. The second claim is that a number of classical interpretations of these concepts fail to recognize either their radical nature or their philosophical potential. Precisely identifying and addressing this shortcoming—while demonstrating the relevance of German Idealism—is the aim of this volume.
