The idea of the musical artwork forms the focal point that opens up the realm of music in its aesthetic uniqueness. Even those musical forms that do not wish to possess a work shape still relate to it, as long as they claim to be art at all. In his fascinating book, Gunnar Hindrichs addresses the articulation of this idea. In close connection with European music from Gregorian chant to complex music, as well as with philosophical aesthetics and metaphysics, he develops six fundamental concepts that constitute the musical artwork: material, sound, time, space, meaning, and thought.
