The fold is, for Deleuze, the contribution of the Baroque to art, but especially the contribution of Leibnizianism to philosophy. In Leibniz, he discovers the turns of "folding," of "unwrapping and wrapping," and reconstructs a Baroque metaphysics from this. Deleuze makes this metaphysics fruitful for the description of the present, as Leibniz's philosophy leads not to restriction but to the multiplication of principles - thus becoming an alternative to systematic rationality.
