Product details

German Classicism is constituted on the threshold of the 19th century: With the programs of a "tragic vaccination" and renunciation as "affect prophylaxis," Schiller and Goethe rehearse the defense against hypertrophied emotional worlds. Their models engage with contemporary debates about vaccination, which Luhmann sees as a symptom of the formation of social immune systems, while Foucault views it as a transition to biopolitical modernity. In fact, Schiller's dramas of the sublime and Goethe's narratives of renunciation outline scenarios for the problematic securing of political communities. Cornelia Zumbusch's study thus describes the immunization fantasies of Classicism as a site of aesthetic and political upheavals, where their modernity is particularly evident. A fascinating new perspective on one of the great epochs of European literary and cultural history.
