German Classicism is constituted on the threshold of the 19th century: With the programs of a "tragic vaccination" and renunciation as "affect prophylaxis," Schiller and Goethe rehearse the defense against hypertrophied emotional worlds. Their models engage with contemporary debates about vaccination, which Luhmann sees as a symptom of the formation of social immune systems, while Foucault views it as a transition to biopolitical modernity.
