Product details

Le Plaisir du texte brought down the foundational pillars of the French theoretical landscape in 1973 and triggered numerous aftershocks of the same magnitude around the globe. At that time, Roland Barthes was regarded as a co-founder of structuralist analysis of society and culture: In his most famous work from this period, Myths of Everyday Life, the French people's favorite habits were traced back to their objective sign structure. In S/Z, the interpretation of a Balzac text, every sentence and every paragraph was assigned to a narrative model. In short, Barthes' early works were dominated by the pleasure of analysis. The emphasis, indeed dominance, of pleasure (in all its forms) in the engagement with literature and society, as it suddenly appeared in The Pleasure of the Text, was succinctly justified by Roland Barthes: "The place of pleasure in a theory of the text.".
