The social construction of transsexuality is the empirical and theoretical analysis of a phenomenon that has established itself in Western societies since the mid-20th century, challenging cultural fundamental beliefs about the bodily nature and constancy of individuals' gender identity. The investigation is based on interaction analytical and genealogical research as well as a comprehensive ethnography of the heterogeneous practices involved in a medicalized gender transition: psychiatric diagnostics, endocrinology, plastic surgery, voice therapy, legal matters, and subculture.
