The history of the discipline of philosophy, as it has been academically practiced since the 19th century, presupposes a disciplining of history, meaning a practical limitation in the historiographical reconstruction itself of what is considered as the past and the history of the mind. The historical problem of philosophy, as textbooks state, is that of its discipline-immanent identity: In contrast, Schneider's study aims to remind us of the problem of the boundaries of philosophy in the late 18th century. For it is in the late 18th century that historical interest in philosophical past first emerges; a new, suddenly productive scholarship begins to engage not only with the history of literature, art, and religion but also with the history of philosophy. The historians of this time are responsible for what continues to shape the evidence of the history of philosophy to this day.
