Domra
German, Joseph Winkler, 2000Product details
The Domra, a group belonging to the untouchable caste in India, oversee the cremation sites in Varanasi at Harishchandra Ghat and Manikarnika Ghat. The Domra sell wood, charge a fee for each body cremated on the banks of the Ganges, and tend to the eternally burning sacred fire from which all funeral pyres are lit. They take care of the individual pyres and gather the ashes. The charcoal remnants and ashes are searched by the Domra for jewelry and valuables before the remains of a burned pyre are released into the river to drift slowly downstream. Once the rituals are complete, the services are held, and the dead are cremated, what remains is pure life: inhumane, pagan, and unredeemed. In fact, the children of the Enlightenment should pursue Winkler as heretics. Nevertheless: D.
