Product details

The black prince Othoon was imprisoned in a cave for many years and is suddenly dragged into the light of day. Wild and without language, he must learn to rule and survive. In this process, he possesses something that the people he now encounters lack: feelings, intuitions, instincts. However, the wild one is tamed; he learns language and social manners, losing his freedom once again in the process.

In the second part of the play, the audience sees into Othoon's mind and experiences his dreams, fears, and fantasies. The parable becomes poetry, the subject of the experiment increasingly turns into a fragment, beginning to glow and grow. But can the dreamer now change the world?

Othoon is a fragment that draws on Calderón de la Barca's Life is a Dream while remaining an independent, modern fairy tale. It addresses power and powerlessness, enlightenment and what enlightenment has made of humanity, with the bitter essence: perhaps only in powerlessness can human closeness become bearable.

World premiere: schauspielfrankfurt on January 19, 2002, directed by Alexander Brill.
