In the lectures on the introduction to music sociology that Adorno held in the winter semester of 1961/1962 in Frankfurt, the relationships between music and society are examined in the diverse forms of mediation, alienation, and delusion, extending to the regulation of music, but not merely through the juxtaposition of musical production and musical reception. Rather, social moments are identified within the musical structures themselves and then related to general social phenomena on one hand and to musical life on the other. The lectures aim from various directions towards the central theme of every music sociology: the social mediation of music.
