The first part of the volume, which contains Schröter's work on Elias and the theory of civilization, deals with changes in the regulation of sexual behavior from the 13th to the 16th century. At its core is the relationship between state formation and impulse control. In response to the biased criticism from Hans Peter Duerr, Schröter defends the model of a sequence of different patterns of behavioral regulation in the context of a process of civilization. Three short articles on marriage, paternal love, and the prohibition of abortion utilize the same developmental perspective to understand contemporary events. In the second part, Schröter processes the personal observations he made during fourteen years of collaboration with Elias as his German translator and editor.
