Thinking and Poetry: both are children of language. It took a very long time for autonomous thinking to crystallize from orphic chants, rhapsodic fictions, and shamanic analogies. Yet, since the Greek classical period, as this thinking sharpened towards abstraction, it remained bound to the ancient heritage of poetry for millennia: to rhythm, phrasing, timbre, and intonation, to rhetorical figures, images, and symbols. A language of sensuality, vibrating with meaning and inner movement: this is the form of expression of the greatest thinkers from Heraclitus to Plato, Descartes and Spinoza, Hegel and Nietzsche, up to Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and Sartre. Conversely, poets are continually drawn to conceptual systems: Steiner's new work pays homage to the great masters and masterpieces of such synthesis, the beautiful fusion of poetry and thought.
