Illouz summarizes this peculiar relationship as emotional capitalism and explores it in various fields. She examines the new forms of emotions in internet chats and dating sites, in lifestyle magazines and films, but also focuses on the professional group that derives its capital from the confusions and complexities of emotions: clinical psychologists.
