Austrian writer Franz Theodor Csokor referred to Horváth's "most mature work to date" in a letter to Ferdinand Bruckner regarding Horváth's Don Juan Comes from the War on July 4, 1936. "A sinister spectacle reminiscent of the graphics of Goya and Kubin, in which an unpaid debt for the destruction of a man drives the perpetrator away from all women who in some way resembled his victim, to the grave of his once beloved, where he freezes in the snow, thus succumbing to the cold from both outside and within." It was not until fourteen years after Horváth's death that Don Juan Comes from the War premiered in November 1952 at a cellar theater in Vienna.
