During Thomas Bernhard's lifetime, the publication of these stories did not come to fruition: he was too occupied with the novel "Extinction" and the play "Heldenplatz," along with the ensuing scandal. In "Goethe Dies," the four stories are brought together for the first time, in accordance with the author's wishes, in a single volume: they showcase the clear-sighted master of tragic moments and comedic situations, who, at the height of his art, unfolds and exaggerates the motifs and structures of his entire oeuvre.
