The second volume of the Complete Stories gathers, in chronological order, the tales that Hesse wrote between the ages of 26 and 28, alongside his early novels "Peter Camenzind" and "Unterm Rad." Only about half of these stories are included in the collections he published himself; the others appeared in newspapers and magazines. Early love stories such as "Hans Amstein," "The Marble Saw," "The Latin Student," and "Hay Moon" are presented alongside accounts from Hesse's apprenticeship as a locksmith (1894/95) in his hometown of Calw.
