Angela Merkel is the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The piece of paper in the cashier's hand is a fifty-euro note. John Searle is married. With sentences like these, we say something about the world: that there are indeed things like chancellors, money, and marriages in it. However, these social facts only exist because we believe they exist. This is not the case for natural facts, such as gravity. Does the world thus break down into different spheres of being? Are there perhaps two or even three realities? No, says John Searle, there is simply one single reality, the foundation of which is the world of nature as described by physics, biology, and chemistry. How the components of the social world can still seamlessly fit into this reality, and why they are just as real and objective as things that exist independently.
