Stanislaw Lem has undergone a significant development in his work: from adventurous science fiction novels and stories, he progressed to increasingly complex linguistic and conceptual structures. He has thus found his own hybrid form of narrative prose and discursive essay, a kind of metaliterature. While Lem wrote reviews of non-existent books in "The Perfect Vacuum," in "Imaginary Magnitude" he seeks to liberate the art of writing prefaces from the slavery of the works to which they are bound: "No one undertakes to free preface writing from the cage of unfreedom, from the treadmill of forced labor. Therefore, there is no other advice: I must, albeit more out of a sense of duty than from a stirring of the heart, come to the aid of introductionism - to become its liberator and midwife." This is what Lem explains.
