Product details

In the history of philosophy, the art of living has long been dismissed with the argument of hedonism. However, a long-forgotten, ancient field of philosophy resurfaces when the art of living is discussed: a forgotten landscape of thought and existence. The fact that the art of living is once again a topic of inquiry is a consequence of the fundamentally changed conditions and possibilities of existence in modern and postmodern times. Referring to Michel Foucault and particularly the "art of living" he outlined in his later works, Wilhelm Schmid reopens the area of the art of living for philosophy. However, his study is not limited to Foucault's work; it also highlights a tradition that includes Montaigne as well as Kant, Hölderlin, Nietzsche, and Heidegger.
