It is part of the repertoire of contemporary diagnoses to characterize modern society by increasing phenomena of indifference. One of the first theorists to make this finding the central subject of his social theory was Karl Marx. This work attempts to elucidate, through a critical and text-based interpretation of his main work, Capital, how Marx analyzes the constitution of capitalism-specific relations of indifference; it also demonstrates how these indifferences are adversaries of Marx's critique of capitalist society.
