Even though "global human rights" have become a standard part of political discourse, their philosophical justification remains a contentious area. While some argue that human rights are the Trojan horse with which the West seeks to export its neoliberal lifestyle to the world, others associate the idea of global citizenship with enshrined rights as an unacceptable interference in the sovereignty of democratic states. In her book, Seyla Benhabib develops a discourse-ethical toolkit to overcome such false dichotomies. Through numerous examples—such as the headscarf debate, refugee policy, and humanitarian interventions—she illustrates pathways to an engaged, context-sensitive democratic cosmopolitanism that transcends both interventionism and indifference.
