Kosovo, the autonomous province of the former Yugoslavia disputed between Albanians and Serbs, declared independence in 2008 against the resistance of Serbia. Erich Rathfelder, who has been a correspondent on the ground since 1987, has closely followed the conflict between Serbs and the Albanian majority: the revocation of the autonomy status in 1989, the nonviolent resistance of the Albanians, the armed struggle of the UÇK, the NATO intervention in 1999, and the subsequent phase of civil transitional administration.
