Two essays about the so-called Central Europe are named by Juri Andruchowytsch and Andrzej Stasiuk in their literary double portrait of a landscape they have traveled together. On foot and by car, they journey between the Beskids and Bukovina, traversing Polish, Slovak, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, and Ukrainian territories, creating - as ethnographers, map readers, reporters, and poets - a new terrain: literary Central Europe. While Andruchowytsch follows the traces of his German great-grandfather, who came from Bohemia to Galicia before World War I, discovering the submerged history of small metropolises, Stasiuk appears as a perception-obsessed land surveyor with a magical eye. Their geopoetics is an indispensable contribution to the discovery of new Europe and to overcoming the boundary that comes with expansion.
