Mein Israel
German, 2015Product details
The Berlin photographer Ali Ghandtschi set out for Israel to portray writers and artists and to form his own opinion about the country. At some point, he began to ask questions and recorded the conversations with a tape recorder, as a German, Persian, non-Jew in a unique position. To avoid steering the conversation straight into politics, he asked his interlocutors to share stories from their childhood. Almost all were pleased that someone was interested in personal stories and not just politics. Nevertheless, the memories in this volume often stretch into the present and touch on the current situation. Since everything in Israel is connected to politics, childhood memories are political as well. The images by Ali Ghandtschi also reflect a daily life that is only seemingly ordinary. They tell of the underlying tones.
