Product details

The essays collected in this volume by Jürgen Habermas address the ever-relevant and contentious question of the role of philosophy in the process of generating knowledge. Starting from the supposed "master thinkers" Kant and Hegel, Habermas poses the question of the appropriate mode of justification for philosophy in the first essay. In the second essay, he develops a model for the interplay between empirical research (psychology) and hermeneutic reconstruction (philosophy) based on Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral development. In the third essay, he outlines the justification program of discourse ethics, with particular attention to Karl-Otto Apel's transcendental pragmatics. The volume concludes with the titular essay, which illustrates what a successful division of labor between hermeneutic and empirical sciences looks like in practice.
