The obligatory capital courses in student circles around 1968 mark the beginning of a development in the humanities that leaves the positive knowledge canon of individual disciplines to decay. Whether one is a Germanist, philosopher, or art historian – the main thing is that one has read Marx and later all the others. This essay traces the dominant currencies of the fashionably varying meta-discourses. Beginning historically with the Frankfurt School and ending with Derrida as a master thinker, it describes their function: the postmodern monoculture fulfills the politically correct task of driving out genuine knowledge of specific subjects and methods from the humanities.
