Natural philosophy and metaphysics seem to be two distinct, even mutually exclusive philosophical approaches. However, if we define natural philosophy as the metaphysics of nature in the sense of the project to arrive at a coherent and complete view of the world based on scientific knowledge, a new and surprising constellation emerges. The reference to the natural sciences gives metaphysics the justification to be revisionary, meaning it can revise claims of knowledge that stem from everyday understandings of the world. On the other hand, such a metaphysics is as hypothetical as the sciences themselves. Michael Esfeld first demonstrates how one can advocate for scientific realism within this framework and then justifies controversial theses such as that of a four-dimensional block universe composed of events.
