Volume I of the collected works. In May 1940, the poet Nelly Sachs (1891-1970) fled Berlin to Stockholm on one of the last flights. This marked the beginning of thirty years of exile, during which a lyrical body of work emerged that was honored with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966. Alongside her friend Paul Celan, Sachs is considered one of the most important German-speaking poets of the post-war period. From the elevated tones of her early epitaphs to the themes of flight and transformation in the 1950s, to the drastic, searing riddles of her later works: poetry always represented a form of survival for this author, aiming for a poetic "penetration" of the world. With this collected edition, which will include not only the complete lyrical works but also the remote prose writings and many dramatic poems, including unpublished plays from the 1960s, the poetry of the exile author comes to the forefront.
