Sociology has so far observed the steep rise of brain research, which began with the advent of new imaging techniques, rather hesitantly. There is a lack of a sociological theory of the brain; similar to gravity or oxygen, the existence of this organ was simply taken for granted. Building on the points of contact in the considerations made by authors such as Heinz von Foerster, Humberto Maturana, and Niklas Luhmann regarding closed systems, Dirk Baecker now embarks for the first time on this interdisciplinary venture "right at the edge of competence transgression." According to Baecker, one cannot simply ignore the neuro-publicists who derive increasingly questionable consequences for the reform needs of schools, courts, broadcasting institutions, and internet services from dubious research findings without facing repercussions.
