Volume 2 of the complete edition contains Valéry's dialogues and plays from 1920 to 1945. The debates, inspired by the Socratic dialogue, provide an impression of Valéry's extensive interests and explore controversial forms of artistic creation.

Following the dialogues are the cycle Mon Faust, the melodrama Amphion, as well as other theoretical writings on theater. With his unfinished pieces from the Faust cycle, Valéry connects to Goethe and places the characters, with their quest for the expansion of rational abilities and total mastery over nature and the world, in the 20th century. As in all of Valéry's work, the language charged with philosophical thought here also necessitates a re-examination of the material.
