French phenomenology has had a unique influence on the humanities of the 20th century since its beginnings in the 1930s. In his extensive study, Bernhard Waldenfels explores these effects—sometimes as a commentator, sometimes as a combatant—both historically and systematically, including detailed analyses of Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and Ricoeur.
