Pathic experiences that befall us require responses but do not tolerate a definitive conclusion. Platonic dialogues are interjections whose edges, fractures, and abysses cannot be summarized in any doctrine, as Bernhard Waldenfels demonstrates in his book on Plato. The fact that the embodied practice of speech exceeds its content is evident in the motives of Socratic midwifery, the polyphony of speech, the seduction of words, the commodification of doctrine, the driving force of Eros, healing through discourse, the intrusions of violence, hospitality, and animals as mirrors and distorted images of humanity. The foreign is a resonance of Socratic atopia.
