Essentially, the poetry of the Greek Nobel laureate Giorgos Seferis (1900 to 1971), writes Christian Enzensberger, from whom the translations in this volume originate, is very simple poetry; it has preserved a very basic structure: Things are, people do. It takes us into a landscape of the soul between the banks of noun and verb, which we have never really noticed there, into a space in between that feels both foreign and familiar at the same time.
