How much emotion can a society that strives for justice tolerate? Not much, one might think, and point to the dangers of politically exploiting fears and resentments. Emotions, according to a widespread view, incapacitate rational thinking and should therefore play no role. Martha C. Nussbaum, however, argues that to politically realize justice, not only a clear mind is required, but also a positive emotional connection of citizens to the common cause. Some refer to this as dedication; Nussbaum calls it love. She demonstrates the forms of expression that these and related political emotions can take and how they can be cultivated.
