Pragmatics as the basis of semantics and syntax
Hans J. Schneider, 1975Product details
Schneider starts from the insight that speaking and language must not be understood merely as an expression of a detached consciousness process, but rather as an action. His investigation aims to answer the question of what consequences this insight has for the currently discussed linguistic theories. More specifically: In what light does the relationship between the components of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics appear when this insight is taken seriously? Schneider approaches this question from the perspective of semantics. What might a linguistic semantics look like, and what role does it play within linguistic theory? He addresses the various conceptions of interpretative semantics and demonstrates how problems of linguistic theory formation are intertwined with questions of the philosophy of language. His main theses are: The semantic.
