The center of true religiosity, according to the avowed atheist Albert Einstein, is the awe of the mysteries of the universe, "the highest wisdom and radiant beauty of which we can only grasp rudimentarily with our dull powers of understanding." In this sense, he, Einstein, considered himself a deeply religious person. But what is religious about such a stance, in which God clearly plays no role? Ronald Dworkin addressed this question in his Einstein lectures, which he developed into this book shortly before his death. Religion, he posits, refers to a worldview that is underpinned by a deep belief in objective values—such as the idea that creatures have dignity, that a life can be fulfilled or missed, or that beauty, which takes our breath away, cannot be explained merely as a product of our sensory organs.
